Introduction

There is a strong probability of the use of autonomous weapons (AWs), also known as Killer Robot or Robotic Weapons, in the future global war fares. The use of such highly dangerous 21 st century war fares is posing serious challenges to the civilian protection and humanitarian laws. It is need of the hour to strengthen the voices of countries and global civil society advocating for a complete ban on the use of Killer Robots. Diplomatic talks by the Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) on questions raised by lethal autonomous weapons systems have attracted strong interest since 2014, with more than 90 countries participating. The eight meetings have seen strong convergence on the essential need to retain human control over the use of force and the goal of an international ban treaty is now sought by 30 states, as well as UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Keeping in view of the variety of prevailing prolonged violent conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, it is quite important to create public awareness and build momentum in the entire region for eliminating the threats of the use of such AWs in near or far future. There are as such no national or regional level legislations in place to ban the use of AWs in current or future conflicts in the South Asia region.

CMDO Introduction

Community Motivation and Development Organization (CMDO) is a member of the “Campaign to Stop Killer Robots”-Global coalition of 160 civil society organizations in 60 countries. This global campaign is actively working to prohibit fully autonomous weapons and retain meaningful human control over the use of such force. CMDO in coordination with the Campaign is aiming to sensitize general public especially youth in South Asian region on the horrible consequences of the use of such autonomous weapons and build public opinion for the future development of specific national/regional policies, legislations, and agreements against the use of Killer Robots. CMDO through this web portal is aiming to generate a regional debate among youth groups on the horrible impacts of the use of AWs in the region. The upcoming advocacy activities on this web portal include building online resource center (reference readings, audio-visual materials), publishing articles/features and webinars on Killer Robots.
